What is SEO, really?
SEO is not tricking Google. It is making it easy for Google to recommend you. That reframe changes everything.
Imagine a librarian in the world's biggest library. Four billion books, and people walk up all day asking questions: "Something about fixing a leaking tap?"
The librarian's whole job β and whole reputation β depends on handing over the most useful book, fast. Not the book with "TAP LEAK FIXING" scrawled on the cover a hundred times. The genuinely useful one.
Google is that librarian. Your website is one of the books.
The reframe that separates beginners from pros
Most beginners think SEO means tricking the librarian. Fifteen years ago you could β stuff a page with keywords, buy fake recommendations, done. Google has spent two decades and billions of dollars specifically to kill those tricks, and today they mostly get your site buried.
Modern SEO is the opposite of tricking:
Be the page the librarian is proud to recommend β and make sure they can read it.
That's two jobs, and this whole course hangs off them:
- 1Deserve to rank β genuinely answer what people are searching for, better than the other pages.
- 2Be easy to read (for a machine) β clear titles, clean structure, working links, fast loading.
Why SEO matters more than ads
When a business wants visitors, there are two roads:
| Paid ads | SEO |
|---|---|
| Traffic starts today | Traffic takes months to build |
| Stops the second you stop paying | Keeps flowing while you sleep |
| Costs money for every single click | Clicks are free once you rank |
| Rented | Owned |
The smartest businesses do both, but the ones that survive lean on SEO, because free, compounding traffic is the closest thing marketing has to magic.
What SEO is NOT
Worth killing these myths on day one:
- It is not instant. Real results take 3β6 months. Anyone promising "page 1 in a week" is selling something you don't want.
- It is not a one-time task. It's a habit, like exercise. An hour a week beats a heroic weekend once a year.
- It is not secret knowledge. Google literally publishes guides on what it wants. The "secret" is that most people don't do the boring work.
The three pillars you'll learn
Everything in SEO fits into three buckets:
- 1Content β do your pages answer what people search? (Modules 1β3)
- 2Technical β can Google read your site without tripping over anything? (Module 3)
- 3Reputation β do other sites vouch for you by linking to you? (Module 4)
Miss any one and the other two carry less weight. But here's the encouraging part: most of your competitors are doing all three badly, which means doing them decently already puts you ahead.
Too Long; Didnβt Read
- SEO means making your site easy for Google to find, understand and confidently recommend β not tricking it.
- Ads are rented traffic; SEO is owned traffic that compounds while you sleep.
- Three pillars: useful content, a readable site, and other sites vouching for you.
Your tiny task
Google something you know well β a hobby, your town, a product you use. Look at the top 3 results and ask: why might the librarian have picked these? Note one thing they all have in common.
It takes a few minutes and itβs the bit that makes the lesson stick.
