Why one link from a respected site beats a hundred from junk directories.
The very first lesson of this course promised three pillars: content, technical, and reputation. Modules 1 and 2 built the content. Module 3 cleared the technical path. One pillar remains — reputation — and in SEO, reputation is counted in links.
Module 3 already drew the boundary line: a link between your own pages is an internal link, fully in your control. A link from a different site to yours is a different creature entirely.
Why Google counts links at all
Google's founding idea — the insight that beat every older search engine — was borrowed from academia. In research, the papers that matter most are the ones other papers cite most. Google applied the same logic to the web: every link is a citation. When a site links to your page, its owner is spending a little of their own reputation to say, "this is worth your reader's time."
