Using a browser like a professional

Tabs, bookmarks, profiles, and searching properly with operators.

Count where your work actually happens. Email — browser. Calendar — browser. Google Docs, the HR portal, the dashboard, the training videos — browser, browser, browser. For most office jobs, the browser is the office, and yet almost nobody has ever been shown how to use one properly.

Rahul realised this the day his laptop slowed to a crawl and the troubleshooting checklist from Module 1 pointed straight at the cause: sixty-three open tabs.

Tab discipline

Every open tab uses memory, which is why "the computer is really slow" so often means "close some tabs". But the deeper cost is attention — sixty-three tabs is sixty-three half-finished thoughts.

Three habits fix it:

  • Pin the daily five. Right-click a tab → Pin. Pinned tabs shrink to a small icon, sit permanently at the left, and reopen with the browser. Email, calendar, chat, your main document, the dashboard — pinned once, found instantly, never closed by accident.
  • Close as you finish. Ctrl+W closes the current tab. Module 1 gave you the safety net: Ctrl+Shift+T brings back anything you close by mistake, so closing is never risky.
  • Declare tab bankruptcy when needed. Sixty tabs you are "going to read later"? Press Ctrl+Shift+D to bookmark all of them into one dated folder, then close everything. They are saved, findable, and no longer eating your memory or your attention. You will open perhaps two of them again — which tells you what those tabs really were.
