What is CAD, and why do so many jobs want it?

Every building you've entered, every machine part, most furniture, the pipes in the walls, the roads outside — before any of it existed physically, it existed as a technical drawing: a precise diagram with exact measurements that told the makers exactly what to build.

For centuries these were drawn by hand — rooms full of people at tilted tables with pencils and rulers, redrawing an entire sheet because a wall moved 20cm. Then computers ate that profession in a single decade.

Why CAD conquered paper

Three unbeatable advantages:

1. 1Precision. On paper, a line is "about 5 metres". In CAD, a line IS 5.000 metres — exactly, provably. Builders and machinists work from these numbers.
2. 2Change without redrawing. Client moves a wall? On paper: start the sheet again. In CAD: select, move, done — everything connected updates.
3. 3Reuse. Drawn one standard door? Insert it a thousand times, share it with a colleague, use it for a decade.

Who actually uses this (the jobs list)

"AutoCAD" appears in job listings for:

The entry-level role in most of these is drafter (also called draughtsperson or CAD technician) — the person who turns engineers' and architects' sketches into precise, buildable drawings. It's a genuine skills-based career door: employers test whether you can actually draw, not where you learned.

2D first — and why that's the right call

Modern CAD includes 3D modelling, and cousins like Revit and SolidWorks specialise in it. This course teaches 2D drafting — flat, measured drawings — because:

• The overwhelming majority of working drawings (floor plans, sections, layouts, schematics) are 2D
• Every CAD program shares the 2D fundamentals: learn them once, transfer them anywhere
• 3D tools all assume you already think in precise 2D

Walk before flying. The flying comes easier than you'd think afterwards.

Getting the software (free options)

AutoCAD is commercial software, but you have genuinely free routes:

1. 1Students: Autodesk gives full AutoCAD free for a year, renewable, to anyone with an educational email — their Education Community site. This is the best option if you qualify.
2. 2Free trial — 30 days, full version, enough for this whole course at a lesson a day.
3. 3AutoCAD Web (web.autocad.com) — a simplified browser version with a limited free tier; fine for the early lessons.
4. 4Free lookalikes: LibreCAD (fully free) and others use near-identical commands. The skills in this course transfer almost completely — a fine practice ground if the trial runs out.
