You have sung along with your favourite song fifty times, so you know it — right? Then one day the music drops out, or someone hands you a karaoke microphone, and the song collapses under you. Verses evaporate. The melody wanders. What happened?
The radio illusion
Singing along is supported singing. The recording feeds you every word a syllable early, holds the pitch underneath you, and drives the timing forward. Remove the recording and you discover how much of the performance was the recording — and how little was you.
Here is the professional method. It looks slower than fifty singalongs. It is roughly ten times faster.
Step 0: choose a driveable song
Pick something on the slower side, sitting in an easy part of your voice (the next lesson shows you exactly how to check that), and something you genuinely like — you are about to hear it a lot.
