The thank-you note, the timing, and what to do while you wait.
The interview ends. You close the laptop, exhale — and enter the strangest part of the whole process: the wait. This short lesson covers the three things that actually help from here, and the several that quietly hurt.
Within 24 hours: the thank-you note
A short thank-you email, sent the same day or next morning, is read by almost every interviewer and sent by surprisingly few candidates. Here's Rahul's, after his interview with Ms. Fernandes:
Subject: Thank you — Junior Accounts Assistant interview
Dear Ms. Fernandes,
Thank you for your time today. I especially enjoyed hearing how the firm handles month-end for its restaurant clients — it made me even more certain this is the kind of work I want to do. One thing I wish I'd mentioned: the reconciliation checklist I built during my internship, which cut my rechecking time in half — happy to share it if useful.
I look forward to hearing about next steps.
Rahul
