Presenting without panic

What to do with your hands, your slides and your shaking voice, in that order.

Your name is called. You walk to the front. Forty eyes turn toward you, your heartbeat is suddenly very loud, and your hands — what are hands even for? Where do they normally go?

Everyone knows this moment. So before any technique, hold onto one fact: fear of presenting is not a character flaw, and not proof that you are bad at it. It is a body alarm — and alarms can be worked with.

Understand the alarm first

For most of human history, standing alone in front of a silently staring group meant something had gone badly wrong. Your body still runs that ancient software, so it sounds the full alarm. You cannot switch it off with willpower — but you can stop feeding it, and you can spend its energy. Every technique below does one or the other.
